Goethe was born Aug , in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany, to a wealthy, middle-class family. He was educated at home by his father and tutors until , when he was sent to Leipzig to study law, his father’s profession. Goethe had shown his literary talent even as a child. Goethe, it is true, was of the opinion that Faust ought to be given, in French, in the manner of Clement Marot; but this was undoubtedly because he felt the inadequacy of modern French to express the naive, simple realism of many passages. The same objection does not apply to English.
